2 kinds of Watercolor Rendering Techniques

A. Black Outline & Watercolor Sketch

The pencil outline is photocopied onto 90lbs. cold press (rough) watercolor paper which is then dry-mounted on form-core (click on thumbnail for larger image). This is a quicker approach and helps meet tight deadlines because the drafted pencil outline doesn't have to be hand transferred to the board but is photocopied on the watercolor paper. Watercolors are then painted onto the watercolor paper directly.

B. Watercolor Rendering (painted edges)

Pencil outline on vellum is transferred directly onto Bainbridge #80 illustration board by hand. The board size is 20"x30", double thickness. Watercolor & guache are then painted directly to illustration board. Edges are finished with straight painted pencil-thin lines or light pencil outline where appropriate (click on thumbnail for larger image).
